  • What causes abdominal pain that is relieved on liquid diet?

I am a 22 year old female. For the past 8 months, I've had constant abdominal pain and bloating, and intermittent diarrhea, constipation, and nausea without vomiting. It came on suddenly. I've also had some sensations of trouble swallowing and a lot of burping (I used to rarely burp and now I burp constantly). I had an endoscopy done that checked for ulcers and H Pylori at a community hospital, but they found nothing except mild gastritis. I've tried H2 blockers and PPI's without any effect. I was then referred to a larger research hospital for more testing.

The new doctors have just done another endoscopy and a colonoscopy. I am waiting for biopsies of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine to come back, but they didn't see anything obvious during the scopes.

I did notice something interesting during the prep for the colonoscopy, though. As you likely know, the colonoscopy requires a liquid diet the day before and a lot of laxatives to clean out the digestive tract. I found that shortly after going on the liquid diet, my symptoms began to improve. By the morning of the procedure, I was virtually symptom free, something I haven't experienced in almost a year. But once I started eating again after the procedure, all my symptoms came back just like before.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Could it point to some kind of motility issue? I am very confused, I did not expect this to happen at all.

    Thank you for your help!

Did you tell this to your doctor? What was his explanation? I've not tried a liquid-only diet, but I wonder if it would help me as well.
